Anti-illusionistische Spielräume: Die ästhetischen Konzepte des Surrealismus, Symbolismus und der abstrakten Kunst im Spiegel der Theaterarbeit Achim Freyers und Axel Mantheys
Inge ZeppenfeldThe handling of stage and scenery by leading theatre artists in the 80s displays a definite tendency to draw on previous phases of the 20th century. This tendency is particularly marked in the work of Achim Freyer and Axel Manthey. Following the historical examples of surrealist and abstract art, they create anti-illusionist acting areas in which veristic representation of reality is eschewed in favour of art(ificial) worlds obeying laws of their own. The study investigates the aesthetic aims behind this kind of post-modern retrospect on the avant-garde of the past.
